Little Big Planet Sackboy – with Pattern

Little Big Planet for PS3

Game Cover

Little Big Planet is a great game that lets creativity drive a unique gameplay experience where anyone can make their own levels, their own content and give items they have crafted as prizes. The main character, much like many aspects of the game itself, is in many ways a blank canvas that can be decorated and manipulated in countless ways, yet even in his plainest most basic form, Sackboy is perfection. A floppy little cutie, clearly knitted, and yet screaming to be recreated in crochet, he is, the reason I pursued learning how to make amigurumi… I wanted a sackboy of my very own.

Little Big Planet Amigurumi Sackboy

Amigurumi Sackboy

I’ve made him before, but this pattern is a refined version, a bit smaller than the previous, a bit more accurate to the character, and significantly less cretinous. The shaping is achieved with stitches increasing and decreasing versus strategic stuffing and sewing. I’ve tried a jointed version but couldn’t get the limbs to sit right (hanging limply downward), so his are stitched in place. Like in the videogame, you can make him any color, change his eyes, clothes, adorn him with accessories and tailor him however your imagination motivates you. SC = Single Crochet
SL ST = Slip Stitch
INVDEC = Invisible Decrease
INC = Increase (2 SC in one stitch)

Sackboy was done using a 3.5mm crochet hook working really tightly. This pattern must be done going through both loops except for the first round after the slip stitch flat top of the head and flat bottoms of the feet, which is done in the front loop only. He should be stuff firmly to fill out the shape.

Head (For an explanation of rounds 5 and 6, have a look at the videos at the bottom of the page)
CH2 or Magic Ring or however you like to start
1. 6 SC in 2nd CH from hook or in Magic Ring (6)
2. INC in each ST (12)
3. INC six times; SC then INC 3 times (21)
4. SC then INC; repeat around (31)
5. SL ST around (31)
6. CH1 then hook through front loop of the first SC stitch of row 4 (under the SL ST you just did) and SC in each front loop all the way around (31) (this creates the fabric straight down away from the flat top without a real rounding or spherical shape)
7. SC around (using both loops again) (31)
8-9. Repeat row 7 (31)
10. SC 11, insert loop through button shank to add the first eye; SC x 2 then INVDEC then SC x 3; insert next button eye then SC x 12 (30) (both loops that hold a button count as a skipped stitch that gets picked up next round and are included in the stitch count)
11. SC x 14 then INVDEC then SC x 14 (29)
12. SC x 4 then INC; repeat around (34)
13. SC around (34)
14. SC x 14 then INC then SC x 2 then INC then SC x 2 then INC then SC 13 (37)

    Hi,

I’m a bit confused on row 3 of the head…it seems that I am only getting 19 sts at the end. Was there a typo, perhaps?

    • miijii says:

Hi there, it goes like this

      3. INC six times; SC then INC 3 times (21)

INC six times = 12 stitches
SC then INC = 3 stitches (do this three times)
SC then INC = 3 stitches
SC then INC = 3 stitches

      So 12 + 9 = 21

I may have written the lingo out a bit confusingly :) Thanks for the comment!

      • Steph says:

First, thanks for providing the pattern, I’m sure my son and daughter (big fans of the games) are going to love these!

I think row 3 needs parenthesis – I got confused there too (is it sc then INCx3, or is it (sc then INC) x 3 ???), it took me a few minutes to figure out what you meant. Think back to math class!

        (sc then INC) 3 times

        OR

        *sc then INC; repeat from * twice more;

I got up to round 11, and I don’t have the eyes yet, so I had to stop until I get them. Probably a good thing for tonight. Between wrestling with this very tight crochet and typing at a computer all day, the tendonitis and carpal tunnel are screaming.

But! I have very high hopes the dolls are going to turn out wonderful!

  7. Martina says:

OMG! I was dying for a birthday present for my boyfriend, but was wandering around crochet sites instead, when I saw “Little Big Planet”.

He’s in love with that game and will now love me even more. Thank you so much for justifying my selfish crochet addiction by helping me.
    …he’s gonna love it!

  8. Martina says:

Where did you buy his eyes?

  9. Jessia says:

Yes please tell us where you bought the eyes?

    • miijii says:

These are little black shanked buttons from Wal-mart, I think they cost like $1.49 for a pack of 5. They are a pretty generic size, style and colour so you can find them at most fabric stores as well.

  10. Carol says:

    This is marvelous!

  11. Amanda says:

What size eyes did you use? I can’t seem to find the proper buttons in store, but I found a site to buy eyes super cheap (www.crscraft.com) but im not sure what size to order…

Although, they’re so cheap there I may just order a pack of each size, and use the rest for other amigurumi toys. :)

    • Emjay says:

The package of buttons says they are 12mm. The thing to be careful with for safety eyes with Sackboy is that his eyes are flattish disks that are very glossy. Most safety eyes are fairly rounded dome shapes. Plain black shank buttons are a pretty generic find in most fabric stores, if you have the patience, might be a good idea to keep looking, unless the safety eyes are also flat :) I got mine at WalMart on the little button carousel, they are branded “LaVogue”. But they have exactly the same ones at Fabricland and in another local fabric store. Basically you want a flattish glossy disc (a bit of curved dome shape is perfect) with a loop or “shank” button hole in the back. You can run your yarn loop through that hole so you don’t even need to sew the buttons on after.

Mind you safety eyes are awesome so always a good idea to stock up. Have a look at glasseyesonline.com, that place is my favourite, he’s got noses and things I’ve not even seen in other shops and really good prices. I usually have a good stock going of everything I could ever possibly need so that way, when inspiration strikes, I don’t have to wait :)

      • Amanda says:

Thank you! I did find the shank buttons, they will be perfect!

I am up to the point where I should be adding the first eye, but… I’m not really understanding how to add it! My working yarn is straight from the skein, so I can’t just pull the button on… and I’m not so sure what to do with a loop? It’s probably a very simple method that I’m just not seeing… Can you help explain how to add the eyes?

        Thank you so much!

By the way, I’ve finished all the other pieces (except I haven’t attached the fingers yet!) but it’s already looking SO good! I love this pattern!

        • Emjay says:

With a shank button, what I do is when I am crocheting the head, when I get to where the eye should be, I pop my hook off, use a small crochet hook to pull that loop my hook was on through the button hole, then stick my hook back into the loop and continue working. It gets a bit tight around the button but basically, a single crochet stitch holds it in place. It’s demonstrated in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAcUttz7pWM using a pony bead but basically with a shank button, the hole acts as the bead hole. The difference is she uses a yarn needle while I use a hook to pull it through, either way though, it works! Thanks for the comment.

  12. Morgan says:

I would like a yoshi amigurumi i loooove him. ;)

  13. Viktori says:

Hi! I’m a little confused about row 6. I’ve finished it once before, but it didn’t look anything like how it should. Am I supposed to chain then do a single stitch for every slip stitch, or am I supposed to chain just the once at the beginning of the row and then single stitch for the rest?

    • Emjay says:

You chain once, basically like a ch after a join. Ignore the slip stitches you just did and hook into just the outer most of the stitches you did in row 4. They’ll look sort of sandwiched together but if you look carefully, the v’s of the stitches are still visible, pinched between the top and bottom part of the slip stitches you did. What you want to do is work that next row of single crochet stitches in the outside loop of the squished v’s. This technique helps the top of his head lay sort of flat and have a cylindrical type shape rather than a round sphere. If you keep having problems with it, you can skip row 5 entirely.

  14. Ploo says:

I see that row 6 confused someone, heehe…well I’m another one. I mean, I don’t want to skip over it, but what I have so far, it’s very, very cylindrical and it doesn’t look too good. I don’t want to be rude and directly ask for a video, though. I don’t know what to do ):

  15. Meeee says:

How do you finish off the end of the arms and legs???

    • Emjay says:

Cut the yarn with a long piece of yarn remaining. Pull that piece through the last remaining loop on your hook. Stitch the hole closed and pull it through the top of the limb and use what is left to stitch the limb to the body. The arms are finished a bit differently, they are sort of like upside down ice cream cones, the open end will be flattened and you will stitch each individual finger into place in the “sandwich”. The arms are worked top to bottom and the legs are worked bottom to top.

  16. Ashley says:

For some reason I am having trouble with the zipper. I’m a bit confused about it. The pattern says to CH 10
SL ST 4 in the second chain from hook
then to CH 3 in the same ST
That part I get but the rest… for some reason is confusing me. :/ can you help with that please.

    • Emjay says:

The pattern actually says to SL ST 4 starting in the second chain from the hook (meaning one SL ST once in the second, third, fourth and fifth CH from the hook), then in the sixth CH from the hook SC 3 in that stitch (sort of like an increase only you are doing 3 SC in the same space), then SC in the 7th CH from the hook, then do 3 SC in the 8th CH from the hook (same as that increase of 3 you did earlier), then SL ST twice to the end of the chain and join it to where you started from, this will make the zipper pull, then CH 3 and join it to the other side of the zipper pull at the top to make the top part of the zipper pull through which you will loop a separate string of 6 CHs in a little loop to attach to your sackboy.

      • Ashley says:

Oh wow! haha I went about that ALL wrong. haha. good thing I asked. XP
Thank you for that explanation. <3

Hi, my husband was looking threw a magazine and saw sackboy and instantly looked at me and asked me to make him one cause he wants one but I have only crocheted blankets and I’m just now working a baby beanie for our son that’s due in may. I was reading over the pattern and I’m not understanding it at all. As u can tell I’m not very experienced with crocheting anything but blankets.

  25. Martha says:

I’m loving it! My first one succeeded, fire-truck-red with yellow button-eyes… I’m now planning on a new one, wearing a bunny-suit or elmo-suit (like a hoody with an elmo face on it)…. Thank’s for the nice pattern, really works nicely!

  26. Myra says:

What kind of stitch did you use for the zipper? I’m not familiar with stitches.

  27. Amanda says:

Hey I was wondering how tall he stands? would love to get started on him!!!
    Thanks!

    • Emjay says:

Around 5 inches or so. If you look at the picture of him with the controller, that is his actual size in comparison to a normal PS3 controller :) He’s the right size to use it like in his pod!

  28. Janira says:

How is the zipper made on the front of the body?

    • Emjay says:

The actual teeth of the zipper are just regular stitching with gray yarn. How to make the zipper pull is explained in the pattern

      Zipper Pull
      CH 10
      1. SL ST 4 beginning in the 2nd CH from hook, then SC 3 in same CH, then SC, SC 3 in same CH and SL ST to end of CH. Join with other end.
CH 6, pull CH through top of zipper and attach to Sackboy under chin. Stitch zipper pattern on body.

  29. Amanda says:

    great thanks!!!

  30. Dawn says:

Thank you for the great pattern! This is the best Sackboy ever made :) When I saw it, I decided to learn how to crochet – with help your tutorials, I made a nice head, the beautiful body (really, I’m proud of myself, it’s the first time I crochet) and tomorrow I’m going to make the rest. But I’m very confused about the zipper – i have no idea how to make this. I have tried several times but it doesn’t look even similar to zipper. (and as you can see, English is my second language). Can you please make the tutorial of zipper? I would be very grateful!

PS. as soon as I will make the whole Sackboy, I will send you photos :)

    Hey :)
I’m just making this sackboy, and I love it! I just have one problem:
What does the STOP in the 3rd row of the leg mean? I’ve never heard this before, andI can’t find anything on google either, so I would be glad if someone could explain this to me :)

  40. Birdie87 says:

    Hey!
    Thanks for an AWESOME pattern!!
    I loves it;)
I’ve started one now, and the head is all done, with one alternation, I opened his mouth:)
I would like to share a pic of that with you, but do not know where I can post it:)
Oh, keep up the good work! I like all your patterns:)

    • Emjay says:

You can email it to me if you like miijii(at)nerdigurumi.com or post it to imgur.com and link to it in the comments. imgur.com is kind of cool because you don’t need an account or anything.

  41. Gracie says:

Hi! I just noticed that round 10 says I must have 30 stitches but I have 29…I followed the instructions but there’s still 20 stitches… maybe something is wrong??

Thank you so much for share this pattern! and excuse my english please =p

    • Emjay says:

So you start off with 31 stitches from the previous round.

SC 11 (11 stitches), insert loop through button shank to add the first eye; SC x 2 (2 stitches) then INVDEC (1 stitch) then SC x 3 (3 stitches); insert next button eye then SC x 12 (12 stitches) (29)

      11 + 2 + 1 + 3 + 12 = 29

That round is weird because the two buttons slipped in a loop as eyes are technically skipped stitches. You are right it works out to 29 stitches and not 30. Basically though, a stitch here or there is not a big deal and for the most part, the stitch count sort of helps you make sure you are in the right direction but a few variances here and there is not a big deal.

  42. Gracie says:

ups! I said 20 but is 29… I wonder if instead of 12 final stitches in the row, there’s must be 13? (in round 10 of head)

    THANK YOU!

  43. callmemargie says:

THis is so wonderful! I have tried a couple of patterns that you have posted already and am starting my sack boy today! Thanks!

  44. rebecca says:

i was just wondering how tall and wide he comes out using the hook you suggested?

    • Emjay says:

The link doll is around 9 inches tall. He is not very wide. It’s not a soft/cuddly doll by any means. The head is perhaps 4 inches wide at it’s widest I think… it’s the fattest part of the doll.

  45. J says:

Thanx for a lovley pattern! I just finished sackboy and wanted to tell that instead of crocheting the zipper i glued on a real metalcoloured zipper and Im realy pleased with how it turned out. I also made a big open mouth with a red tongue..it took about a day to figure out how to do and unfortunately I cant tell how i manage to do it.. =) The yarn used is maby a bit dark but my boyfriend chose it himself as I made sackboy for him.

  46. Kathy Paszti says:

I have just finished Sackboy – for my 29 year old son! Kids will be kids ;) Thank you for the pattern, I managed to work it all out – or fluke it – and he’s so cute!

This was my very first crochet project (it’s obviously not done, I still need to do the detailing), after the beginner peanut you have on your site. I know I’m probably asking for a lot, but would you be so kind to write up some basic instructions for finishing off and for attaching limbs? I have never so much as crocheted a single stitch before making this and I’m having a difficult time doing these things and having them look presentable. I don’t expect a video, but if you could even just email me some basic instructions, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with all these amazing patterns!
