Little Big Planet Sackboy – with Pattern

Posted 03/21/2010

Little Big Planet for PS3

Game Cover

Little Big Planet is a great game that lets creativity drive a unique gameplay experience where anyone can make their own levels, their own content and give items they have crafted as prizes. The main character, much like many aspects of the game itself, is in many ways a blank canvas that can be decorated and manipulated in countless ways, yet even in his plainest most basic form, Sackboy is perfection. A floppy little cutie, clearly knitted, and yet screaming to be recreated in crochet, he is, the reason I pursued learning how to make amigurumi… I wanted a sackboy of my very own.

Little Big Planet Amigurumi Sackboy

Amigurumi Sackboy

I’ve made him before, but this pattern is a refined version, a bit smaller than the previous, a bit more accurate to the character, and significantly less cretinous. The shaping is achieved with stitches increasing and decreasing versus strategic stuffing and sewing. I’ve tried a jointed version but couldn’t get the limbs to sit right (hanging limply downward), so his are stitched in place. Like in the videogame, you can make him any color, change his eyes, clothes, adorn him with accessories and tailor him however your imagination motivates you. Click the link after the gallery to get the free pattern.

SC = Single Crochet
SL ST = Slip Stitch
INVDEC = Invisible Decrease
INC = Increase (2 SC in one stitch)

Sackboy was done using a 3.5mm crochet hook working really tightly. This pattern must be done going through both loops except for the first round after the slip stitch flat top of the head and flat bottoms of the feet, which is done in the front loop only. He should be stuff firmly to fill out the shape.

Head (For an explanation of rounds 5 and 6, have a look at the videos at the bottom of the page)
CH2 or Magic Ring or however you like to start
1. 6 SC in 2nd CH from hook or in Magic Ring (6)
2. INC in each ST (12)
3. INC six times; SC then INC 3 times (21)
4. SC then INC; repeat around (31)
5. SL ST around (31)
6. CH1 then hook through front loop of the first SC stitch of row 4 (under the SL ST you just did) and SC in each front loop all the way around (31) (this creates the fabric straight down away from the flat top without a real rounding or spherical shape)
7. SC around (using both loops again) (31)
8-9. Repeat row 7 (31)
10. SC 11, insert loop through button shank to add the first eye; SC x 2 then INVDEC then SC x 3; insert next button eye then SC x 12 (30) (both loops that hold a button count as a skipped stitch that gets picked up next round and are included in the stitch count)
11. SC x 14 then INVDEC then SC x 14 (29)
12. SC x 4 then INC; repeat around (34)
13. SC around (34)
14. SC x 14 then INC then SC x 2 then INC then SC x 2 then INC then SC 13 (37)
15. SC around (37)
16. SC around (37)
17. SC then INVDEC; repeat around (25)
18. SC then INVDEC; repeat around (17)
19. SC then INVDEC; repeat around (12)
20. INVDEC x 6 (6)
Finish Off and weave in tail

11. SC then INVDEC; repeat around (14)
12. SC then INVDEC; repeat around (10)

SL ST then Finish off and keep a long tail for stitch fingers in

Finger/Thumb (make 10)
CH 4
1. SC 3 (1 SC in each CH starting at the second CH from your hook) to make a “strip” of 3 SC (3)
Finish off and tie both ends of cut yarn in a knot. Trim and arrange in open end of arm, stitching the “fingers” to the inside of the open end and the thumb to the outside. Stuff arm and stitch open end closed sewing through fingers to secure them.

6. (back to working in both loops as per normal) SC x 7 then INVDEC; repeat (16)
7. SC x 6 then INVDEC; repeat (14) (stuff)
8. SC x 5 then INVDEC; repeat (12)
9. SC around (12)
10. SC around (12)
11. SC x 4 then INVDEC; repeat (10)
12. SC around (10)
13. INVDEC x 4 then SC x 2 (6)

Zipper Pull
CH 10
1. SL ST 4 beginning in the 2nd CH from hook, then SC 3 in same CH, then SC, SC 3 in same CH and SL ST to end of CH. Join with other end.
CH 6, pull CH through top of zipper and attach to Sackboy under chin. Stitch zipper pattern on body.

Hook this up!

      Hi Emjay,

I just wanted to stop by and tell you what a fantastic pattern you’ve created here. To date, I’ve made 3 SackBoys (well, one was a SackGirl) and have plans to make at least 1 more.

My husband loves the Chinese Dragon Mask available in game, so I set to work crafting one to fit this little guy :)

Hi, just like you my main motivator for learning how to crochet was the need to have a sackboy of my own, i have used your pattern in combination with goldenjellybeans to make my sons sackboy. I loved that yours has a crochet zipper. It took me a few tries to actual make the zipperpull. Now my question is how do i stich the zipper patern i have tried but with no luck at it looking right. I would really appriciate it if you could tell me how you did it. Thanks.

If you look at a zipper, the teeth are sort of staggered, right to left, right to left, they’re not exactly parallel to each other and they sort of interlock/overlap right at the tips. Look at a zipper and reproduce the pattern of the teeth with simple running stitches.

Hi, I love using this pattern to make presents! I recently made my roommate a batman Sackboy and she loved it! I plan on making a Thor one for her birthday, but I have a quick question. I want to make a Daenerys Targaryen one along with some baby dragons, but I wanted to make Dany a bit bigger so that the dragons wouldn’t dwarf her. How would you go about making a larger sackboy? I’ve used larger hooks, but that doesn’t increase the size enough. Any ideas?

      Thanks!

I’ve been looking for cute amigurumi patterns to do during a trip, and Sackboy popped up during some of my nerdy searches!

I’ll be using a lighter weight yarn and an E4 hook, so mine will be a mini. If I use a regular SC instead of buttons, and embroider little black eyes, the pattern should still work, right? I’m doing this mainly for crochet practice, but that’s no excuse to make it sloppy. :)

Just verifying that the insert-buttons step counts as 1 SC each.

And derp time…apparently an E4 and a 3.5 mm hook are the same thing. ^^; Rainbow Sackboy turned out great, except that I didn’t double-check the gauge on his right arm, so now he has one freaky giant arm. I will definitely perfect this one though–I’m going to have a Sackboy army! Muahahaha!!

Thanks again for the pattern–now to find someplace that has shank buttons in stock! Wal-Mart was actually out.

Mine turned out great. I did use a bigger hook but I use a slightly heavier wool too. He turned out great and my 7 year old daughter is in love with him and now carries him around everywhere. He sits on her knee when she plays little big planet because I sewed his legs on in such a way that they are moveable so he can sit down.

Thanks for the great, easy to follow pattern.

It would be possible if instead of working the body in the round you stopped halfway through each round, CH then turned your work and worked it back and forth. I personally dislike the wrong side of single crochets and couldn’t find a real zipper that looked right, which is why I did it without a real zipper. Good luck!

Hi I’m having trouble from row 3 to 4. How does doubling minus one add up to 31? I get like 41…. I mean after the 21 stitches it says one sc the Inc. Around that adds up to 41? Not 31. Idk maybe I’m a tad confused!

But I must give you props I have been looking for a pattern everywhere for sackboy my husband loves the game. :-)

      Thanks again

You are misunderstanding the instructions. SC then INC means single crochet in one stitch from the previous round, then increase in one stitch from the previous round. You are able to do this 10 times across the first 20 stitches from the previous round then in the remaining stitch from the previous round, you do one single crochet. A 3 stitch sequence repeated 10 times followed by one single crochet is equal to 31 stitches, not 41.

I was a bit confused by your pattern as the repeating sections are not often the most clear. However after reading the comments posted I managed to figure it out. In other patterns, I’ve seen repeating sections marked with an asterisk or placed inside parenthesis. This is just a suggestion to make it easier for future patterns.

The line here that confused me was line 3 that states:
          3. INC six times; SC then INC 3 times (21).
I originally read that I was supposed to do 6 INCs in the stitches from Row 2, and then 1 SC, and then INC 3 times, which would have left me with leftover stitches.

Perhaps if it were more like: “INC next 6 st, (SC then INC) 3 times for a total of 21 st” it would be more clear. Maybe I just fail a little bit at reading patterns. I’ve only used a few patterns before trying this one.

I’m still in the middle of making my first Sackboy, but so far I think he’s turning out great. Thanks so much for taking the time to make this pattern. I’m hoping after making him and a few other patterns, I can figure out how to make my own patterns for the characters in the Avengers, and maybe a few of the Disney Princesses. Ooh, and maybe a Wolverine doll with little claws! Thanks again!

Thanks for the suggestion but I write patterns the way I like to write them because it is intuitive to me to record and then verify what I did. That’s primarily the ease I am concerned about. People trying to use the patterns usually ask questions if a bit is too confusing, and because the questions are answered in the comments, future readers get to benefit from that interaction to figure it out on their end. The semi-colon separates bits that are not related, so in this case, INC x 6 is not related to SC then INC x 3. You can pretend those are brackets if it helps, but they perform the same function. In any case, stitch count clears it up.

I actually dislike asterisks and (brackets) and find them cludgy… This was one of my earlier patterns and I do them now even a bit differently. In any case, you won’t be seeing any asterisks in my patterns and brackets will mainly denote stitch count at the end of the row. That’s just how it is. As you try more patterns, especially free ones, you will likely start seeing even more variances and differences. If you do start writing and sharing your patterns, you will likely also see that no matter how standardized youw write your instructions, or how much effort you put into your explanations, some people don’t get it or aren’t happy.

sorry, don’t publish my previosly question! Now I realize it was my mistake, I didn’t read well. it’s says ‘then INC’… so I had to add 1 increase after the SC.
      Now is clear! Thanks!

      Hello,
thank you so much for create this fantastic Sack boy. I’m totally in love of your pattern!

But I have a little problem…. I finished the head today, and now I started the body.
The first 1,2 instructions are ok and I understood everything.

When I faced the Round 3. of the body, it says:

“Round 3= SC THEN; Repeat around (18)”

Now, if the previously round says “INC IN each ST (12)”

I have 12 stitches in total. So, how I can have 18 stitches, if the 3. round says just to add SC ?
It does not say to increase, so if I have 12 stitches , how I can have 18 stitches at the end?

Thank you if you can help me!

Hi there, I just had a quick question. It probably doesn’t matter too much in this pattern, but is it worked in spirals or joined rounds? I’m about to start and wondering if i should be worried about how much the end of the round shifts as its worked.
Thanks for posting this pattern by the way, super cute little guy :)

Spiral is fine for this pattern. Symmetry isn’t really an issue so it’s whatever you like best :D

These were buttons I bought at WalMart. I think they were 8mm buttons. I used buttons instead of safety eyes because sackboys eyes are flat.

      Hey,
thanks for this pattern:) i’ve a question at row 3 (legs)…that’s what i understood and would do: 1sc 1inc (repeat) is this right? But that would be 18stitches at least and not 12… And in row 4 i should have 18stitches…please can you explain it to me:) perhaps i’ve a translation mistake (i’m german)…would be nice to here from you

      Thanks Nadine

        1. 6 SC in 2nd CH from hook or in Magic Ring (6)
        2. INC in each ST (12)
        3. INC x 6 then STOP (12)

No for round 3 of the legs you do INC x 6 then end the round (it doesn’t go all the way around but you stop there, that’s why it says INC x 6 then STOP). So 6 increases in a row, then you stop like your round is finished and move on to the instructions for round 4.

I loved the sackboy pattern, it was sooo easy. But I didn’t like the fingers and thumb, making 10 individual digits just seemed too time consuming to me (I’ve been crocheting since I was 5 and love to make shortcuts if I can) so I modified your pattern just a little.
After sl st at the end of the arm don’t end off, continue with the ch 4 then 3 sc then sl st in the same space. Sl st in the next st, continue in this way until you have all the fingers and the thumb made. Then you INVDEC 5X until you come to the thumb; turn and INVDEC 3X turn; INVDEC 2X turn and INVDEC 1X (this is the last one, you should only have two st to INVDEC together). This also makes the palm of the hand. Finish off and leave a long enough tail to close the small opening that you will have at this time. Sewing between the fingers sort of pulls them down and they look like they are movable.
Thank you again for the pattern. I have had several requests for them and now just from my 19 yr old son.

I’m not sure what you mean by the lines lines thingy but you attach the zipper pull where his face meets his neck in the center, like on a real sackboy. If you can’t figure it out just cut one out of felt and use that instead.

Thank you so much for sharing this great pattern.
I had a hard time joining the fingers and the arms, so instead of crocheting the fingers separately and sewing them to the arms, i just crocheted them directly to the arms (instead of slip stitching and finishing off after round 12)
      Worked out fine.

The thing is I can not sew to save my life and I have searched and searched to see how you made the zipper stitches on your sackboy’s belly and on the other items that appear to be made with needle and yarn. please give me a link or website that shows how to do decorative needle stitches. Thank you so much for your patterns. You so rock!

Hi, I just have a quick question. I don’t have a 3.5 mm hook, but I do have 3.25 and 3.75 mm. Is it possible to substitute either of these for the sackboy pattern? Thanks in advance :-)

A 3.75 mm hook should be fine with a worsted weight yarn unless you are using a light weight yarn (sport or DK) in which case a 3.25 mm should be better.

Hi, first of all, thanks for the cute pattern. I haven’t started yet but trying to understand the steps before jumping into it, I found myself confuse even at the head part where Steps 10-12. For step 10, how to insert loop for the eyes? Is it skipping a St & sc the next St? For step 11, if previous row was 29sts, then how to add up 30sts even with a INVDEC? For step 12, if previous row was 30sts, then I after Sc x 4 and INC (which will be 6 sts), repeat in round I’ll get 36 instead of 35sts, so where did I get wrong?
      Really appreciate your help. Thanks!

Stitch counting is probably the most annoying part of pattern writing. I wish it were feasible to focus on the instructions vice the count, because structurally, one or two stitches off here or there don’t make a difference and people really sweat it unnecessarily. There have been multiple count issues with this pattern, but the instructions themselves are correct and are really the only part that matter. You didn’t get it wrong, there are errors in the math in the pattern, which is really common with my earlier patterns that employed a lot of uneven decreases and increases. I have reviewed and adjusted the stitch counts for the umpteenth time but it’s probably still not perfect.

For the eyes, you pop your hook off, pull that loop through the shank of the button, then SC in the next stitch as per normal. Each eye counts as a stitch but in the next round stitch in that loop as if it were a normal SC. It’s a bit awkward, but that’s how I did it.

        8-9. Repeat row 7 (31)
        10. SC 11, insert loop through button shank to add the first eye; SC x 2 then INVDEC then SC x 3; insert next button eye then SC x 12 (30) (both loops that hold a button count as a skipped stitch that gets picked up next round and are included in the stitch count)
        11. SC x 14 then INVDEC then SC x 14 (29)
        12. SC x 4 then INC; repeat around (34)
        13. SC around (34)
        14. SC x 14 then INC then SC x 2 then INC then SC x 2 then INC then SC 13 (37)
        15. SC around (37)
        16. SC around (37)
        17. SC then INVDEC; repeat around (25)
        18. SC then INVDEC; repeat around (17)
        19. SC then INVDEC; repeat around (12)
        20. INVDEC x 6 (6)
Finish Off and weave in tail

That sounds about right, try it out and if it looks good run with it but if it looks off a bit restart. I had a look at my sb doll and that looked like a good natural starting point for an open mouth. Good luck! :D

You want to use a yarn needle or a tapestry needle and you will use the yarn tail that gets cut off at the end of the piece or limb. This is a really good tutorial on how to do it http://www.planetjune.com/blog/joining-amigurumi/ and here is a good youtube one from roxycraft http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzmBBl3wUyk

      Hello,

I’m a little confused about step 3 of the head “3. INC six times; SC then INC 3 times (21)” about how it adds up to 21 stitches? I’m fairly new at crocheting but usually I’ve been able to see how the stitches add up, and from the first step where you made 6 stitches and then increased in each stitch I saw how that added up to 12, but I’m confused how the next step adds up to 21 stitches. Can you help please when you get some free time? Thanks very much! I’m making this for my girlfriend for christmas, and I sent a donation too ;) Thanks again for all the cool stuff!

Hi Justin! Thanks for the donation :D You didn’t have to do that to get support but I sure appreciate it!

Okay the way that works is:

        3. INC six times; SC then INC 3 times (21)

We had 12 stitches on our last round. For the first six stitches we will go:
INC six times = 12 stitches
in the next six stitches from the previous row we are going to do this sequence:
SC then INC x 3 in total = 9 stitches

        12 + 9 = 21

I think how it was written is sort of unclear. How I have written instructions has sort of varied from pattern to pattern and this was one of my earlier ones. I can probably tweak it to make it a bit clearer. :D Hope that helps and let me know if you have any questions!

No it’s not really working in a round, it’s worked as written. In all honesty I will not likely be doing a video. I’ll try to break it down again for you though:

          First step, Chain 10
Second step, starting in the 2nd CH from your hook, do one Slip Stitch in each of the next 4 CHs
Third step, do 3 single crochet stitches in the next CH (all three SC in the same hole)
Fourth step, do 1 single crochet in the next CH
Fifth step do 3 single crochet stitches in the next CH (all three SC in the same hole)
Sixth step do one slip stitch in each of the next 3 CHs
Seventh step join to the other end (meaning join this to where you started, the first step). Join it by doing a SL ST , finish off and weave in the end.

This is the other piece, CH 6 leaving a tail for weaving and sewing, loop it around the zipper “tab” you created above so that it is like a little circle loop running through the zipper tab. Stitch it to the sackboy under his chin.

          Good luck!
