Amigurumi Crochet Domo-Kun with Pattern

Amigurumi Domo-Kun

Domo looks menacing but is actually very polite and shy.

Domo-kun, a strange yet very polite creature that hatched from an egg, likes to rock, watch tv, hang out with an old rabbit dude and pass gas when nervous, is here for you in Amigurumi form. This Domo is a good medium size, finishes up to around 10 inches tall. Arms should be wired and it’s not a bad idea to weight his feet and bottom for stability. Black safety eyes or buttons are needed for the eyes. I used 8mm which I think were actually a bit on the small side.

I used felt to make the mouth panel because a crochet panel added too much thickness (I did try it and it looked wrong), and to switch colors in the actual pattern and work in the red as I went made a crooked mouth that slanted to the right because of the way the stitches are offset each from the previous row just a bit. I surface crocheted around the mouth to make it look a bit recessed and finish it off. The pattern, as with all of my patterns, is free.

Amigurumi Domo-Kun

Hello! Thank you!

Amigurumi Domo-Kun

Cute little Domo butt!

Domo was made with a 3.5mm hook going through both loops. He is worked in a spiral without joining. I used Peaches & Creme in Chocolate but any brown yarn will do.

SC = Single Crochet
SL ST = Slip Stitch
INVDEC = Invisible Decrease
INC = Increase (2 SC in one stitch unless otherwise noted)

Head and Body
CH 14
starting in second CH from hook
1. INC, SC x 10 (down one side of the CH), INC x 2 (this serves as the U-turn at the end of your CH, the remaining stitches will work up the other side of the CH back to where you started from), SC x 10, INC; (28) (This video demonstrates working in both sides of a CH)
2. SC, INC (3 in 1 ST instead of the usual 2), SC x 10, INC (3 in 1 ST instead of the usual 2), SC x 2, INC (3 in 1 ST instead of the usual 2), SC x 11, INC (3 in 1 ST instead of the usual 2); (36)
3. SC x 3, INC (3 in 1 ST instead of the usual 2), SC x 13, INC (3 in 1 ST instead of the usual 2), SC x 3, INC (3 in 1 ST instead of the usual 2), SC x 13, INC (regular INC); (43)
4. SC x 4, INC, SC x 15, INC, SC x 5, INC, SC x 15, INC; (47)
5. SC around; (47)
6 – 30. repeat round 5 24 times for rounds 6 to 30; (47)
31. SC x 3 then INVDEC; repeat 9 times; SC x 2; (38)
32. SC then INVDEC then SC; repeat 9 times; SC x 2; (29)
33. SC then INVEC; repeat 9 times; SC x 2; (20)
34. SC then INVDEC; repeat 6 times; SC x 2; (14)
35. SC then INVDEC then SC; repeat 3 times; SC x 2; (10)
36. INVDEC x 5; then finish off and weave in tail.

This video around 1:40 shows how to use slip stitches through the fabric to surface crochet around the mouth.

Arm (make 2)
CH 2 or Magic Ring or start however you like
1. SC x 6; (6)
2. INC in each ST; (12)
3. SC then INC; repeat twice; (18)
4. SC around; (18)
5. repeat round 4; (18)
6. SC x 4, INVDEC; repeat twice (15)
7. SC then INVDEC; repeat twice (10)
8. SC around; (10)
9 – 19. repeat round 8 for roundss 9 – 19; (10)
Cut with a long tail remaining for stitching to body. Stuff the hand and lightly stuff arm. Wire the arm so Domo-kun can pose and menace things (like kittens!)

Leg (make 2)
CH 2 or Magic Ring or start however you like
1. SC x 6; (6)
2. INC in each ST; (12)
3. SC then INC; repeat x 5; (18)
4. SC then INC then SC; repeat x 5; (24)
5. SL ST around (this will help to create a flat bottom for the foot); (24)
CH 1
6. SC x 24 in back loop only of round 4 (leaving the SL ST untouched); (24)
7. SC around; (24)
8. SC x 2 then INVDEC then SC x 2; repeat x 3 (20)
9. SC around; (20)
10 – 13. repeat round 9; (20)
14. SC x 10; CH 1, (turn); (10)
15. Skip first stitch, SC x 8, SL ST; CH1 (turn) (9)
16. Skip first stitch, SC x 7, SL ST; (8)
Finish off and leave long tail for stitching leg to body. Taller part of leg functions as a hip, shorter part goes at the crotch. Cut out a small cardboard circle to line the bottom of the foot on the inside so it sits flat, before stuffing.

    I love this! But I’m really, really new at crocheting and am massively confused by the first line! (I know. Sad…) I’ve done it over and over, but can’t figure out how you’re ending with 28 stitches…with the number of increases I’m only getting 15 or so. Maybe I should stick to something easier. xD;

    • miijii says:

First thing to do is to make a chain that is 13 CH long. You will start by working on one side of it, sort of like when you start a single crochet that is not in the round, like if you were going to make a dishcloth or something.

1st step. In the 2nd CH from your hook, do an increase
2nd step. In the next 10 chain stitch do one SC in each
3rd step. In the next chain (this should be the last one) do an increase
4th step. Pop over to the other side of that chain stitch you just did an increase in and do an increase through that other loop of the chain. This serves as like a U-turn and you will now work up the other side of the chain in the same chains you did steps 2 and 1 in, but in the other loop, going all the way around the chain so you meet back up where you started
5th step. In the next 10 chain stitches (opposite loop from where you did step 2) do a SC in each
6th step. In the next chain (this will be the same chain you did your first step in but in the opposite loop) do an increase.
That is the first round sort of broken down. Basically you start working up the chain in one direction, do a U-turn then come back down the other side of the chain and meet up with where you started to complete the long sort of rectangular shape of the first round.

I love this, but the mouth is too huuuuuge….

    • miijii says:

I know! I was disappointed once I put it on, with FABRIC GLUE! Sewing always makes the edges fray so this was my brilliant idea to get around that. So not a fan of felt applique… anyhow, the mouth isn’t part of the pattern so feel free to make it more proportionate :)

Followed this pattern and made my own Domo-kun! Received well by my peers, and was fun to make. Great instructions, not a terribly difficult pattern for beginners. http://twitpic.com/20ot2w

  8. Me says:

How do you wire the arms?

    • miijii says:

I buy copper electrical wire at the hardware store (you can buy it buy the length so it’s not a big investment, and if you but the kind of cable that is several wires in a plastic jacket it works out even cheaper because you can strip the wrapper off and have three or more wires) because it is sturdy enough to be bent and stay bent in the shape you put it in but be flexible enough to be bent again. For arms or legs, you can either run one piece of wire through both limbs with the ends sticking out, then slip the arms on each side and stitch them in place, or you can anchor the wire for just one arm to a bigger safety eye which is then clipped in to the body like a joint. This is a terrible description so I’ll put something together tonight to show you what I mean :)

hey. i’m having trouble with this pattern. don’t know if i’m doing it wrong. it’s super cute and i want to make it for my brothers birthday coz’ he’s totally in love with domo. was wondering if every row you connect it somehow? please help. thanks. =P

    • Emjay says:

Hi Kris, thanks for your comment. This pattern is worked in the round without joining, meaning basically you keep going around and around like a spiral. So the first stitch from row 2 takes place on top of the first stitch of row 1, etc. If you prefer you can join each round to the beginning of itself with a slip stitch and then CH 1 to start on the next row, some people prefer to do it that way and it doesn’t really affect the pattern so long as the stitch count stays the same :)

  13. Me says:

I dont understand how to wire the arms.. D: could you please have a video or picture or something thank you :D

  14. Paris says:

Hey there!!I was just wondering how tall did he come out to be?Im planning on making a domo-chan (girl domo) for myself and then a regular domo for my brother!!Well more or less likely both are for me ^_^ but he is soo cute!I was going to stitch the mouth panel in red yarn (i realize I’d be sitting for about an hour stitching on a mouth by hand) and crochet some round teeth for the domo-chan.I’ll be sure to post a pic later!!
    P.S.
I’m trying to find a way to make the mouth sink in so its more domo like….teehee it would be like a box-ish mouth with a round edging on the top and bottom…Im sooo curious as to how she will come out!!

  15. DC says:

is the pattern stitches purposely offset for affect or to make it look spiral? I’m asking as I saw you noted you couldn’t crochet/switch colors for the mouth because it came out slanted due to the offset stitches. If i tried to make them straight would it not look right?
Thanks, this would be my first amigurumi and I want it look right and your domo and stitches are beautiful

    • Emjay says:

If you join at the end of every round then CH1 to start on your next row, then the stitches will be symmetrically stacked one on top of the other and you can switch to red then back to brown and so on to make his mouth. If you work in the spiral, each stitch is always a tiny bit to the right of the previous stitch, so his mouth would come out slanty if you tried to do it that way. The spiral doesn’t really do anything for the look of the piece per se, it’s simpler in that it doesn’t require joining at the end of each round/row, and there is no obvious join line (which is for me what seals the deal because my joins look cretinous). It comes with a drawback though, which that it’s a spiral so stitches don’t stack one on top of the other, but rather lay out slightly to the right relative to the previous rown. I prefer to work in the spiral because my joins always look bad, but someone else may have better luck and have tidier joins :) For what it’s worth I did try starting this pattern by joining for that very reason and my joins were too lumpy looking so I got frustrated and ripped it and started over in the spiral. I would recommend though, if you are intrigued, give it a shot with joins and see how you like it, if it’s looking good, then you might be able to pull off a nice symmetrical mouth worked in stitches instead of added felt which would rule because stitches are best in my opinion :D Let me know how it goes!

  17. Renee says:

Quick question. I plan on making both the large and small versions of Domokun…will one skein of brown yarn be enough for both?

    • Emjay says:

It depends how much yarn is in a skein. If I remember correctly, one ball of Lily Sugar and Creme was enough for the large Domo and there might have been enough left over for the little one but it would be close. But if you are using yarn that has larger skeins (think Red Heart Super Saver) you would be okay for sure.

  18. Renee says:

I ended up going with Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn…192 yards/3.5 oz. I think that will be enough…since Lily Sugar and Cream is about 120 yards..I wouldnt have guessed that would be enough for one big Domo-Kun, so if it is then 192 yards should be enough for one big and one small.

    THanks for the reply! :)

  23. emily says:

hey, i’ve tried doing this pattern about 10 times now and i read through your instructions for the girl who had trouble with the first part. This is the part i’m stuck on too.
Why did you say in those instructions to chain 13 when the pattern says chain 14?
I’m just not ending up with the right amount of stitches you state in the pattern that i should have. I did watch your youtube video about how to crochet on the other side (turning) and i am still having trouble. I make amigurumi a lot and this just seems difficult.

    • Emjay says:

I think in the pattern I had an extra chain to avoid a hole and I forgot to mention that in the detailed explanation. The thing is, the technique is not complicated. It may not be explained in a way that is intuitive to you and that is making it seem complicated. But basically, try to think of each CH in your chain as being composed of two loops on either side with a bar down the middle, and try to think of working in one side, then doing a U Turn and working the other side. If the various explanations and the video don’t make sense it may be better just to move on to another pattern. If you still have your attempts and can take a picture I can try to figure out what is going on, but beyond that I am not really able to help.

  33. Genny says:

First of all, thanks for the pattern! I’m not exactly sure how to do the mouth; can you explain how to do the stitch chain around the felt? Is that chain actually stitched to the body, or is the whole mouth glued on? Thank you!

  34. Genny says:

Hi, I have another question, sorry :P

Row 31 says “SC x 3 then INVDEC”, which would be 4 stitches. But the total amount of stitches, 38, isn’t divisible by 4. So row 31 for me is 36 stitches. Should I just add 2 additional SC’s?

Make the 10pm Domo with the mouth crocheted in like the 5 in one. Any help with what rounds and which stitches to switch to red on the pattern for the big one?

  38. Sarah says:

I’ve tryed to do this pattern so many time and it keeps coming out more of a smile face rather then a straight line. I’m so confused with what I’m doing wrong. I think I’m on the 2nd row (number 2 on the pattern). I read earlier in someone’s comment about the pattern saying ch 14, but in the video you said 13 or something like that. I’m just so confused on what to do!!!!! Help help me!!!!!

    • Emjay says:

Can you please take a picture of your failed attempts? It will really help me see what is going on. Please take a picture, upload it to imgur.com then link it in your response to this comment so I can have a look, it would be the easiest way for me to decipher I think.

      Thanks!

      • Sarah says:

sorry it took so long to get back to you. I had to wait till i could get my hands on a laptop. but ive uploaded the pics. I took 3 with a descriptions so you can tell which one is which. I’m hoping you can get back to me soon. I’m making this for my boyfriends sis for her birthday. Shes having a hot pink domo-kun cake ^.^ (i think thats really cool lol) and i was going to make her one to match it, but my pick yarn is to thin. I’m going to have to get thicker yarn to make it, but i wanted to try to make me one so i know how to make hers. thank you so much!!!!

  39. Kim says:

    Hi! I’m
Attempting to do this by joining the rounds to make the rounds even instead if a spiral. What row would you start switching to red if you were to crochet in the mouth and how many stiches wide?

    • Emjay says:

Just guessing based on the photo because this doll has been given away already, but I would suggest starting the transition to red around row 13 or 14, although it could be lower… you sort of eyeball it as you go, but I think 13 or 14 might be about right. As for how many stitches wide to make it, you probably want to eyeball that. I could guess based on the photo but it would not be a very exact guess because I don’t have the doll. Basically at that point, the head is 47 stitches around, half of that is 23 and a half. If you think of the 23 stitches at the front of the doll, you want to eyeball how many stitches should be brown on either side. Look at a regular Domo kun and try it out. If you go too far or not far enough you can always pull those few stitches and redo. Just make sure it is centered, so if you do a mouth that is 13 stitches wide, you have 5 brown stitches flanking either side of the red. I’d love to be able to give you an exact suggestion, but because the doll is gone I have no reference and the pictures
