Perler Beads and Cross Stitch… shall I muddy the waters?

Posted 11/11/2010

Perler Beads and Cross Stitch

Welcome addition or distracting menace?

I’ve been on a cross stitch and perler bead kick… and now that I’ll be doing a workshop for each at Tsukino-Con 2011, in addition to my crochet panel, it’s unavoidable that these crafts eat up more of my crafting time and attention.

The thing is… this is “Neridugurumi”, not “Nerdiguperlerbeads” or “Nerdigucrossstitch”… so what I’d like to know from my fabulous readers is, information regarding those crafts, patterns, tips on where to find supplies, tutorials, should I include it (read include, NOT replace… amigurumi is still where my heart lies) here or not? I know I am definitely not up to creating another site just for this purpose, because I barely have enough time to maintain this one, so it’s sort of a go or no go sort of thing… so riddle me this, would you, my awesome readers, be pleased if I expanded this website to include this new realm of nerdy crafting, or should I be a purist and feature amigurumi and amigurumi only? Please leave a comment with your yay or nay or filibuster, as appropriate 🙂

I think it’s a grand idea! My daughter (and son too (for his g/f)) are big into perler beads. I got her a starter set for Christmas from Michaels, or Hobby Lobby, sorry I can’t remember which. But either place didn’t have a great supply. I’ve looked and decided that the next time I buy her supplies I’ll buy from Amazon. They have a pretty good selection and also lots of accessories, like the boards etc. I myself LOVE crochet. My kids don’t have the patience, they want to see their work immediately. To have both crafts on one site would be great!

I recently found your site and have only recently discovered amigurumi. I only started to crochet in the last few years and have knit and cross stitched since I was a kid. I love the perler/hama beads stuff but have never done it, the patterns from them are so easy to convert to a crochet chart. All nerdy crafts seem to merge someway or another for me, I use aspects of one to create something new in anther so expanding can only help those like me who like a finger in everything!! Keep up the good work xxx

Oh yes please feature more nerdy based crafts! I crochet, cross stitch, paint, draw, decoupage, sculpt, sew and customise my little ponies. I would love to see some more stuff to inspire me. And I’m always looking for new crafts I might enjoy.

I’d love to see you expand!

First, because most crafters aren’t one-craft wonders. I knit, crochet, work in clay, felt, needle felt, and spin. Plus polymer clay, embroidery, sew, quilt, and cross stitch. And I do geeky Perler beads when the kids pull them out.

When I see something I don’t do, it’s inspiring. Sometimes it inspires me to learn something new. Sometimes it inspires me to make something in a medium I know, but differently.

It’s all good. And it’s all very much appreciated. Thank you for all that you do and share. I always enjoy your posts.

Yes, expand to similar crafts which are likely to appeal to those of us who love things like nerdigurumi. I just found your website and now my videogaming children want to learn how to crochet. They already know perler beads so that would be great!

If someone only wants to read about amigurumi, they are welcome to read the articles that are tagged as such.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind reading about other crafts….

Of course you should! How many single-crafters do you honestly know? If we crochet, we probably do other crafty things and are interested in learning more. (Otherwise, why look up craft blogs on the Interwebs, amirite?)

Plus, non-granny cross stitch patterns? DOO EET NAOOOO PLZ.

of course it’s ok to expand, I think many people have their favorite, but like to do something else every now and then. And you should only have to rename your website when there are more posts about other things, I should say: go for it girl 😉

I think more craftyness is always a good thing – I haven’t done any cross stitch myself for ages as it is just so time consuming but I may well get tempted to give it a go once you start posting about it. Oh – and the photo of what you’ve been working on so far is fantastic!

I actually just found your site today via another site via google search (talk about 5 degrees of separation!) and saw your Big Daddy pattern and fell in love. My boyfriend adores the games and I think I might make one for him now. In regards to this post though, I’ve actually been wondering about those silly little melty bead thingies for a while. I have done needlepoint/cross stitch many times before, but the beads are a mystery, so I would love to see stuff on it and any other needlecrafts you feel like posting. This site has been added to my bookmarks and I’ll be clicking the “like” button on facebook as soon as I’m done commenting. Awesome site and thank you so much for all the free patterns!

It’s still nerd-crafting, and I wouldn’t mind a bit of a peek into the world of other arts and crafts if that’s what you’re working on. I don’t see any reason not to include it here.
