Angry Birds Red Cardinal and Green Pig Amigrumi Pattern
Angry Bird is one of my mom’s favorite games and since I have made her seventy three billion NobyNoby Boys, it seemed a good idea to go with something different for her xmas gift this year, so Angry Birds it was. Things were down to the wire (it’s been nuts this year), so two amis were all I could put together, but I do believe they were a hit.
I realize there are already several patterns for these available online but between the significant portion of them that were pay (tsk tsk!), the simpler than ideal shaping on some (pig is not a perfect ball people… he’s just not!) and my general (read TOTAL) reluctance (read UNWILLINGNESS) for reading or following any pattern (inclusive of my own) I decided to whip mine up on the fly all the while keeping decent enough notes to publish the pattern since it’s been a while and you’ve all been so fabulously patient.
Pattern Details These were made using a 3.5 mm crochet hook and my stash of 100% cotton worsted weight yarn, colours listed below. They stand around 6 inches tall. The facial details are felt fabric glued to the surface and 6mm black safety eyes were used for the eyes. Some pieces are worked in joined rounds while others are spiral. The pieces in joined rounds typically need symmetry and will turn out better if worked in joined rounds vice spiral. The pieces calling for spiral will look better that way. While it may seem weird to keep switching from one to the other, it’s recommended the directions are followed for optimal results.

Thanks so much for this pattern! I made them for my 9 year old nephew and he loved them!
Thank for these awesome patterns. I am as fond of angry birds as my little grandson and when I saw them and the easy to follow instructions I immediately started to make them. Would be thrilled if you could give patterns for the rest of the angry birds. For the eyebrows I plan to chrochet using black
I cannot download the pattern? How do I get it?
The post is the pattern. You don’t “download” it, you look at it.
Thank you for these very cute patterns. I made these for my 4 year old nephew & he’s had hours of enjoyment from them…much better than playing the games on his tablet!
I made the eyebrows using black yarn as follows: right eyebrow-chain 7, DC in 3rd chain from hook, hdc, 2sc, sl st, break off leaving long tail to sew. Left eyebrow- chain 8, dc in 3rd chain from hook, dc, hdc, 2 sc, sl st, break off leaving long tail to sew. Sew over eyes with thinner part on the inside close to beak. Also used black yarn to make french knots for nostrils & iris of eyes.
Great pattern but I do not see the instructions for the eyebrows. Can you post them please?
Sorry, I misread. I see they’re felt. Still a great pattern.
I was just wondering, are we allowed to sell things made from your patterns?
Read the FAQ please.
I like your pattern and I already made one for me. Thank you so much for sharing
Thank you so much for your wonderful patterns! My sons and nephew have been clamoring for me to make them the piggies from this pattern ever since I finished the birds. The birds were very easy to figure out. I’ve had one little hiccup reading the piggie pattern, but figured it out quickly. Since I was making the birds for the 6 yr and under club, I did whip stitch all the felt pieces on, but I think they looked great. I’ve gotten some fantastic comments from adults on the finished pieces! My nephew is a Super Mario fan, so I’m likely to be back to make your great-looking Kirby in the near future. Please keep up the good work and thank you for all that you do!
I do like ur pattern found it easy to understand until i came to the eyes the left eye made no sense ended up winging it no pun intended but the tail is ridiculous sooo co fusing and i consider myself quite capable of understanding a pattern !! Can u pls make it more easier to understand cause im sooooooo confused !!!!
If you have an actual question as opposed to a complaint I can try to help you. “Make it more easier” is not going to happen because what makes sense to one person isn’t necessarily intuitive to another person. If you are not understanding the instructions, specifically request clarification on what you don’t understand and I can try to help.
Hi, I love your patterns, I’ve made several gifts to my friends and they are a big success so thank you. It’s great that you share your patterns with everyone for free. I just want to ask if you can come up with a pattern for the yellow angry bird, it will be a great addition to the collection
Greetings from Bulgaria
concerning the green pig pattern, row 4 does not come out to 30 stitches, if you do the first part x2 that is 8 stitches then do the increase which is 2 and 1 SC= 3 5 times, 3×5=15 so 8 plus 15 = 23 not 30, am I doing something wrong????? please help fast my little grandson is waiting for this
4. SC then INC then SC; repeat x 2; INC then SC; repeat x 5; (30)
1+2+1, (repeat it two more times) +8, 2 + 1, (repeat it 5 more times) +15
So we have 4 + 8 + 3 + 15 = 30
See at the start of the pattern in the terminology where it says “repeat x # = do the sequence once then repeat it appropriate # of times”? That was explaining what I mean by repeat.
It doesn’t get said enough – so thanks heaps for this pattern! I made the pig which was _very_ well received.
Hello,Dear, first of all thanks for the pattern of Angry birds, but I have a doubt lap 5. I get more points, is that there is an error? because when I SC INC x6 gives me 32. thank you!
SC + INC = 3 stitches. You do the sequence once (for 3 stitches) then repeat it six more times (18) for a total of 21 stitches.
Great pattern, thank you for sharing, very easy to follow. I have made the red one for my son and showed pictures on my blog, with a link to your pattern. I have been asked by some of my readers for a Czech translation of your pattern. I just wanted to ask if you would be happy for me to translate and publish the Czech version of your pattern on my blog, with a clear explanation that it is just a translation, not my own pattern and with a link to your original pattern. But don’t worry, if this is not it possible. Thank you, Jana

Just curious, do you recommend stuffing the feather tops on the cardinal?
Thanks!!!
No they should not be stuffed unless they look particularly deflated.
Hi! I am trying to make sure that I am doing the red cardinal’s eyes correctly. Perhaps I am misunderstanding your shorthand, but I do not end up with 14 stitches in the second row. For example, for the left eye, I chained three, DC three times in the next stitch, DC x 2, SC x 2, SC x 2, SC x 2, SC. Can you help? Thanks!
Stitch count was off by one but it really doesn’t matter, just follow the instructions. The first CH counts as a DC.
Just wondering how big the end result is? I want to make both of these for my twin boys, but would like the end result to be about the size of a soccer ball, what do you suggest? by the way you are very clever!! Love your patterns!! Thanks Liz
It is a bit larger than a softball.
Thank you sooo much for sharing this! Great pattern, the best I`ve seen!! I made these two for a friend`s daughter, she loved them n_n
Finished my angry bird and gave it to my grandson – he LOVED LOVED LOVED it! Thanks very much for the great pattern.
what’s the difference in joining rounds and working a spiral?
Primarily symmetry. Watch this tutorial video for more information on the differences.
спасибо большое за понятное описание работы! Даже не зная английского языка с легкостью разобралась.
Thank you so much for these patterns! My son is obsessed with Angry Birds, and when I saw your patterns, I decided to take up crochet! Seriously, I had never done it before. My sister taught me the basics, and the rest I learned from youtube. Your patterns were so easy to follow, that even a total novice like myself, had great success (Granted, they don’t look as good as your, but as a first timer, I am thrilled!)! He will love them when he finds them at Easter! I looked up the yellow bird pattern online, there are a couple, and they look so much more confusing than your patterns. Thank you for making it doable!
Thank you so much for these patterns! My son is obsessed. I actually decided to learn how to crochet so that I could make these for him! You made the directions very easy to follow, even for a complete beginner like me. I have the pig done, and am starting soon on the bird. Thank you so much!
For the ears of the pig. I seem to be not understanding it fully. I made a magic circle of 6sc. Than to work in a join not around I did a slip stitch and chained one. Followed by the INC. do you have an any idea of what I am doing wrong on this?????
thanks
You’re not doing anything wrong. 6 SC in the first round, you slip stitch the last SC to the first then CH once to start working the next round. The next round is 6 INC (one in each SC of the previous round). Why do you think something is wrong?
I thought I was doing something wrong because after I do 6 INC I still have the ch one left…Also your ears look bigger with nice shape and mine seem small and just a circle. I am using a cheap metal 3.5 hook with cotton worsted weighted yarn.
I guess by problem is that after I finish the 6 INC, I have 13 V´s ; 12 from the INC and the ch1 from the slip stitch…Am I suppose to slip stitch and ch 1 again followed by the 3 slip stitches….
Join it then do slip stitches.
Thanks, the ears look fine now.
The pig nose. I am at the point where I should have 22 V´s and should start the22 slip stitches, but I have 26.
What I did was make a magic ring of 8 sc, slip stitch to join, ch 1, followed by doing an inc then doing it 8 more times. this is what i understand when i see inc 8X.
maybe that is where i am going wrong?
Sc x2 etc… I do the action, sc, then i do it 2 more times.
If this is not the problem, do you have any ideas?
INC x 8 means do 8 increases. Doing an INC then doing it 8 more times is 9 increases. You have 8 stitches in the previous round, each stitch gets one increase in it.
May I ask how big these are?
6 to 8 inches tall.
Thank you! 🙂
Thank you. Such an easy to end pattern. Great results. I blogged about it here.

Thanks also for the video of the slip stitch. New stitch and technique learnt. Fabulous. Thanks again
My 5 yr old grandson is crazy about Star Wars and Angry Birds. I had been looking for free starwars patterns when somehow I came across your pattern for angry birds. LOVE IT!!!!
He will be getting angry bird and piggy real soon.
Made a simple cat bookmark for big sister to go with the book she was given for Christmas. All the others ( total of 7) have gotten something crocheted from Mamaw – Now it’s his turn.
Just started back with my crocheting in July (first projects, two afghans for newbie grands and then two amigurumi dolls for to that are sisters). It’s been a busy time crocheting — SOOOO MUCH FUN!!!
Thank you for such a well written pattern – I think I am getting better at reading them, too :). But your’s sounds so easy – can hardlly wait to get started!!
Thanks for sharing this fantastic pattern! My kids just love their new toys :-):

Hi one more doubt, in case of joined round :
Should I need to chain 1 and start the next round?
After completing every round should I join the stitch to first single crochet of prev round or to the chain stitch.
Pls help
Please see this tutorial.
Thank u, any idea of making yellow bird and black bomb one.. I just finished both above.. It has come out very well.. Thanks a lot for sharing such amazing pattern..
Of all the patterns I searched in Internet, only yours was damn good and easy to follow.thanks a lot
Hi is there a black yarn around the bird’s beak? Do I need to stitch or is it crocheted?
Those are sewn on details with embroidery thread.

Thanks for Sharing this great design. I have a question: How to make the black eyebrow to the red bird?
They were felt cutouts glued on with fabric glue.
How do we make the eyebrows???
They were felt cutouts glued on with fabric glue.
These look amazing, and exactly the ones that my nephew wants! Thanks for making them available for free, and awesome quality!
Hello
First of all GREAT PATTERN. Finally one that actually is a real look a like!
Second: I’m working on Red here. He’s almost finished. But I’m working on the tail and I just can’t quite understand wath you mean. Do I have to close the round? And I don’t understand the first part of round 2. Al those stitches in the first stitch? Sorry, I just don’t get it, I’m sorry.
Love Lily
Have you read all of the older comments? Clarification has been requested and provided on the tail a few times alread. 2. CH x 2 and DC x 3 then SL ST in first stitch means do two chain stitches then put all of this: DC x 3 then SL ST in the first stitch. You did actually understand it, you just didn’t think you did.

i really love this attern its soo easy to follow thank you so much but I am not that experienced in crochet so i was wondering if by chance you have an idea on how i could go about making smaller versions of these (like as stocking stuffers sized) ones that would be about the size of hacky sac or a bit bigger than a golf ball- my son like to toss these around, and if possible to make them using acrilic wool that says to use a size 5.5 hook ?
You might be able to find a pattern for a ball that size and make that then add the features in felt or something. 😀
Make them with smaller yarn and hook.

Thank you so much for this pattern and making them free. Mine came out awesome, I’m so proud. Not as perfect as yours, but pretty cool nonetheless! The pattern was really easy to follow which I appreciate, although I did have to use your more detailed instructions of the cardinal tail from a previous post. Next I’m gonna do the Portal companion cube and I can’t wait 🙂
