Deadmau5 Head Amigurumi Pattern
Pattern Details
I made this using worsted weight, unmercerized cotton yarn and a 3.5 mm hook. Felt is recommended for the mouth.
Head
For the head, complete the 12 row sphere pattern from the Ideal Crochet Sphere Pattern offered free by Ms. Premise-Conclusion
Ears (Make 4)
CH x 5, work in joined rounds not a spiral.
1. SC and HDC in first CH, DC x 2 in the next CH, DC x 4 in the next CH then pop over to the other side of the same CH and work 4 DC in the other loop of the same CH (This video demonstrates the technique of working in both sides of a CH), DC x 2 in the next CH and HDC then SC in the last CH; (16)
join with a slip stitch then CH x 1
2. SC then INC; repeat 7 more times; (24)
join the finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing
Sandwich the ear pieces with right sides facing out and sew two together (whip stitch) for robust ears that will not be floppy. Pin to head and stitch in place.
Eyes (make 2)
CH x 2 or Magic Ring
1. SC x 6; (6)
2. SC, INC, SC; repeat once more; (8)
Finish off and leave long tail for sewing. Pin to head and stitch in place.
Because of the shape of the head, the mouth should be made of felt. It will likely be necessary to cut a fold (a small pizza wedge that extends to the middle of the mouth) from the bottom part of mid-section of the smile and stitch it closed with white thread. This will permit the felt mouth to wrap around the sphere. I glued mine in place with fabric glue then sewed it to the head once the glue was dry. Please ask any questions about the pattern in comments so answers can be helpful to others in the future.
Hello! My boyfriend loves this DJ and I am thinking of giving him a crochet DeadMau5 bigger, like a plush.
How many stitches do you believe the sphere must be?
Do you think it will look nice in a bigger size?
Thnx por the pattern! <3
Hey. I was really hoping that i might be able to get access to a video tutorial on how to make this. I am a visual learner, and it would highly help me. please and thank you!
Simple pattern and easy to follow. No problems.
When I was taught to crochet I was about 5 yrs. old. I have been doing crochet work for over 60 yrs. now and it is rare that I don’t spot problems in a pattern before I try to make it.
I was taught to read a pattern at least 3 times before starting the work. The first time was to see if I understood all the terms in the pattern. If not now was the time to find information on what I did not know. Such as new stitches or stitch patterns I needed to practice and become comfortable with before making the item.
The second time was to look for things that did not make sense to me. Such as when row 6 says there are 20 stitches and row 7 says 30 stitches but I did not see an increase. Questions: Did I miss something? or Did the printer or designer leave something out? We all have accidents.
The last time to read through the pattern was to actually visualize the stitches and see how they blended together so I could decide if I wanted to make the item or not.
Doing this has never failed me yet and I thank my mother and grandmother for teaching me this. Patterns back then did not come with all the extra information they contain today.
Please take the time to read the patterns and you will find that your enjoyment and understanding of the art of crochet are both increased.
OMGoodness DeadMau5 is my son’s absolute favorite. I made him a hat, using coathangers to shape and hold the ears! I’ll try and show you the pic through link. I’m definitely gonna make him the keychain to go with it! Thank you!

I didn’t understand how you made the ears….I tried it two different ways and it still didn’t come out right…
Did you watch the video on working in both sides of the CH?
omg!!! i love this pattern. I’m using it as a base for a different character tho. i LOVED the way you did the ears, But I’m so confused as to how to make them. got any hints? it’s mostly the starting off… its just doesn’t make sense to me since I’ve never done a joined round… but i’d LOVE to get that look.. thanks!
Did you watch the tutorial for working in both sides of the chain.
I’m having trouble understanding the pattern for the head! Is there another pattern I could use? Or is there a better written pattern for it?
What exactly is it you are having trouble with and not understanding? Maybe rather than asking the author for a “better written” version of it, you could actually try to learn how to read it? My patterns are not written very differently from most, if anything they contain more details and information suited for beginners.
I’ve only just started learning crochet the past day or so, with this project being my very first one to try and I’ve managed to follow it just fine.
You probably need to watch some crochet tutorials on YouTube if you’re unsure of what to do, I did and it helped me a lot!
I was having troubles with this at first too. What I had troubles with was with the numbers. For example, in row 4; “2, inc, 3, inc, 3, inc, 3, inc, 2 (21)”. They say at the top in the abbreviations that when you see numbers like that, it means you do that many SC. So Row 4 would look like this: SCx2, INC, SCx3, INC, SCx3, INC, SCx3, INC, SCx2. And then “(21)” Just means in total the row has 21 stitches. Does this make sense?
That is correct.

Hey, I was curious about the chain you have on the head of Deadmau5. Where did you get it? If you don’t mind me asking.
It’s ball chain in key ring lengths from Michael’s. You can find it in the leather work section of the bead stuff. There are around 10 in a package for $6 or something ridiculous like that so bring a coupon. Failing that you can get them crazy cheap on ebay and etsy. I had tried a hardware store since that sort of chain used to be readily available for hanging bath and sink plugs but no luck.
Oh, wow, I’ll have to wait ’till I get a coupon then. Not surprising, though, Michael’s is always expensive. Thanks for the info, I’ll be looking for them.
Do you plan on doing a tutorial at all about the deadmau5 head? I would love to get a visual about it! I love your work by the way 😀
No, it’s really not that complex. It’s a sphere and then some oval shapes. There is a linked tutorial that demonstrates the basic technique for working in both sides of a chain.
i ust luvvvvv this pattern it’s awsome the ears were a little hard to make but otherwise good job!!!! i can’t wait to show it off 😀
Awesome 😀
Love your patterns (and Deadmau5)… Canada FTW!
Hey thanks so much for the pattern! However I’m having trouble getting past the first round for the ears. I do the SC and hdc in 2nd ch from the hook but when i get to the 4 DC im always left with one ch at the end. Any idea what im doing wrong?
You’re not doing anything wrong! Just ignore that last CH. The hole left by putting 4 DCs in the same CH is less noticeable if there is a spare or extra CH at the end. Just ignore it and pop over to the other side of the same CH you last worked in.
OMG! Deadmau5! I love it! (applauds)
Hey! Massive fan of the site here, saw this and just HAD to make it (big deadmau5 fan too!
Here’s my version! I wasn’t very happy with your version of the ears, so I just did a magic ring, 12 dc into magic ring, then in the next round 2 dc into each dc (so you end up with 24).

Thanks again for the inspiration and the pattern!
Much love!
I completely adore your version of the ears. I respect the author of this site very much and love her patterns, but I found that her version of the ears was too complicated for my limited crochet skills 😛 and your version provided a nice alternative. Although I made four of them instead of two, because I wanted a nice thickness to them. Much thanks for your alternative.
I love all of your amigurumi patterns!
Hello! I am a HUGE Deadmau5 fan, and fellow hooker. 🙂 I actually replicated the Reservoir Mau5 collectible, but crochet….and much bigger. 🙂 Nice….I love seeing other crocheters ideas
My son is a HUGE Dead Maus fan & moving across country this week. I have a feeling this little guy will be in one of the 1st care packages he receives from home 🙂 THANKS!
Awesome 😀
OK, so I’ve got the head made & I’m moving to the ears. However, I’ve never done the joint round…I’ve only done spirals.
I’m having a hard time aligning the 2 sides. It’s making a lopsided oval shape! Lol So, any tips on this process? Know of any videos I can watch? I tried to find a video tutorial & no luck.
I did watch the one from your Domo pattern that is linked in the instructions, but it didn’t seem to help me with whatever MY problem is.
Maybe I can send you a picture of the ear I make & you can diagnose my trouble? 🙂
The ear is supposed to be oval shaped but not really lopsided. Try having a look at this tutorial video about joining rounds. If you are still not able to get the ovals looking right maybe take a picture of what you have made, upload it to imgur.com and post a link in a comment reply so that I can have a look and see if I can figure out what might be happening.
