Legend of Zelda – Toon Link Play Set with Pattern

Legend of Zelda - Toon Link Amigurumi

He has a sword and shield

Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda : the Wind Waker is probably my favorite of the Zelda games. It’s a beautiful game with a great story, good music and a funny, weird, cute and fabulous bunch of characters. Toon Link is really expressive, cute but not too cute, child like and innocent but not over the top. I love it, but more importantly this game my kid has loved and played since she was 4, it’s one of her favorite childhood videogames and for that it has a special place in my heart and has cemented the Gamecube as a staple of our household. Toon Link has been the focus of several DS games, but I really hope Nintendo brings him out of console retirement soon.

This pattern has been a long time in the making and I dare say rivals my Bouncer in terms of intricate pieces and annoying details. If I had lots of spare time or was in prison or some such place, I’d go for different coloured Four Swords Links and add more accessories and enemies and of course Zelda, but for now this set is it. Some parts and details are optional and the accessories can be left out if you want to cut corners. I share the pattern for the whole thing, but be warned, it’s really long and may have some parts seeming complicated or confusing.

A Link was requested several times in the videogame thread so for those who asked, I am pleased to say, here you go :) If you tackle it and have questions or notice mistakes, let me know but if you could please use the comments, rather than contact me via email, other people who may experience similar head scratching will see your question and my answer, so it’s win-win.

Videogame Character or Theme Amigurumi Pattern Requests Please!

    Posted 03/25/2010
    Category Amigurumi Patterns - Videogames

I’m wanting to go on a videogame themed amigurumi bender, and I’d like to hear from the masses. I get a lot of positive feedback from folks along the lines of “I’ve been looking for a free pattern for this guy!” or gleeful statements of that sort… which makes me wonder, what other sorts of bizarre, obscure and awesome characters are people looking and waiting for?

So riddle me this, what characters or game themes would you like to get a free Amigurumi pattern for? I’ll pick one and do it up to the best of my ability then post it free. Please leave a comment or tweet me or something along those lines :)

In other news, I am getting all social with a facebook fan page (you can join by clicking the buttonmajigg to the right, no pressure or anything… just saying is all :D ) and twitterings… come join me yes? So it’s not just a big empty room with like my mom sitting in the corner.

Little Big Planet Sackboy – with Pattern

      Little Big Planet for PS3

      Game Cover

Little Big Planet is a great game that lets creativity drive a unique gameplay experience where anyone can make their own levels, their own content and give items they have crafted as prizes. The main character, much like many aspects of the game itself, is in many ways a blank canvas that can be decorated and manipulated in countless ways, yet even in his plainest most basic form, Sackboy is perfection. A floppy little cutie, clearly knitted, and yet screaming to be recreated in crochet, he is, the reason I pursued learning how to make amigurumi… I wanted a sackboy of my very own.

      Amigurumi Sackboy

I’ve made him before, but this pattern is a refined version, a bit smaller than the previous, a bit more accurate to the character, and significantly less cretinous. The shaping is achieved with stitches increasing and decreasing versus strategic stuffing and sewing. I’ve tried a jointed version but couldn’t get the limbs to sit right (hanging limply downward), so his are stitched in place. Like in the videogame, you can make him any color, change his eyes, clothes, adorn him with accessories and tailor him however your imagination motivates you. Amigurumi Big Daddy Bouncer from Bioshock, with Pattern!

        Bioshock - Big Daddy Bouncer

        Big Daddy (Bouncer) from Bioshock

The Bouncer is the iconic image of Bioshock, the first one anyhow… with his glowing portholes, Little Sister in tow and posture no man could envy, a cuddly version was an absolute necessity. This has been my most ambitious and maddening pattern design so far because of all of the pieces and details involved. I started a long time ago and had originally hoped to have this out before the release of Bioshock 2, but had to redesign so many parts and I couldn’t crochet fast enough to get it together in time, so here he is a few days behind schedule in all of his Amigurumi glory… Mr. Bubbles is all yarn save for 8 buttons (no wire reinforcements and yes he can stand up on his own!) Pattern is after the photos for those ambitious enough to want to make your own Big Daddy! Click photos to see the larger version.

Katamari Damacy – Katamari Prince Amigurumi Pattern

          Katamari Prince

          Katamari Prince

The Katamari Prince pattern has been a long time ambition of mine because I have a lot of clump spirit. The pattern is a Nerdigurumi original made in my usual array of worsted weight cotton yarn. The head and body were done with a 3.75 mm hook and the legs and arms with a 3.5 mm hook while the antenna and red ball were done with half strands of yarn and a 2.5 mm hook. An actual Katamari pattern will be coming up soon!

Noby Noby Boy CatToy Redux Pattern

            NobyNoby Boy Amigurumi Cat Toy

the original one being destroyed by my cat Lucky

NobyNoby Boy is quite possibly my most favorite video game of all time. This is a pattern I originally posted to the now defunct Noby Noby League thread at the EU Playstation forums. It was originally stuffed with catnip, nicknamed “Crappy Crappy Boy” on account of the cretinous facial features and was presented to my cat Lucky (pictured above) for her to murder. Now it lives in shame in a crag by the litterbox, having been thoroughly used, abused and discarded. The pattern did make it’s way on to Kotaku and from there sort of all over the interwebs, which is sort of fabulous, but I have improved and tweaked it a bit because it was perhaps overly simply and a bit more wangish than I was happy with.

This next one, not filled with catnip, has earned earn a slightly less pitiful fate and resides at my mom’s place, enjoying a leisurely retirement. The pattern is available after the photos. He can be made as short or as long as you like, and a long wire through his body could make him poseable. Pretty much any color can be used for the body segments including a solid single color, but the head and butt should be pink for 1P, blue for 2P, orange for 3P and green for 4P.
